Church Bio

The spirit of the Lord stirred the heart of Elder D.L. Sanders and in the year of 1934 in the month of June. Having his tent with him, he left Detroit, Michigan, along with two missionaries and came to Springfield, Ohio driving a 1932 V-8 Ford.

Elder Sanders then proceeded to stretch the tent on the corner of Perrin and Eden Avenue. He preached the gospel until November. During this time he and the members were able to purchase the present building. He and the congregation marched from the tent site to Innisfallen Avenue and the church was dedicated by the late Bishop R. F. Williams. Elder Sanders continued pastoring the church until 1936 when he met with death in an automobile accident in Urbana while in route to Detroit, Michigan.

One week later Elder B. E. Reid succeeded him and served as Pastor for two years, from February 1936 to 1938. Elder H. T. Christian (District Superintendent) succeeded him and he was followed by Elder A. Jones who served for a few months. Elder J. G. Jackson began pastoring in 1940 and served until 1945. It was during his administration that the church received its name “Gospel Tabernacle”.

Elder R. H. Holmes began pastoring from 1945 to 1948, and it was during his administration that the church purchased its first furnace and had the roof of the building lifted. Elder H. S. Bell succeeded him and many things were accomplished during his administration. The basement and sanitary facilities were made available and the auditorium was remodeled. He worked to beautify the church until the Lord called him from labor to reward on October 2, 1967.

Elder W. C. Hookfin succeeded him and served as pastor from October 1967 to May 2006. The Lord continued to bless and much was accomplished under his leadership. New church furniture was purchased for the sanctuary and basement. New windows were installed, and a new heating system was installed. Many other accomplishments were completed.
Elder Cornelius Hookfin succeeded him on June 27, 2006 and is currently serving as the present Pastor. Under the current administration some of the accomplishments are: purchasing of additional land on the corners of Western and Innisfallen, Bell and Innisfallen, repair and painting of the sanctuary, new light fixtures, ceiling fans, upgrading the p. a. system and musical instruments.

Pastor Hookfin and the members are determined to work as never before being reminded of the word of God, “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Joshua 1:5
